Through Shape of My Heart, I wanted to tell the story of a card player, a gambler who gambles not to win but to try to figure out something; to figure out some kind of mystical logic in luck, or chance; some kind of scientific, almost religious law.” — Sting (Gordon Sumner)

Christ is presented to us in a number of ways. There are grand images like that of a King that reigns forever over a happy realm of saints and angels but there He is also presented to us as a humble Shepherd, a kind Samaritan who takes upon Himself to save the abused traveler. Other times He is the Warrior who returns full of fury and justice to crush His enemies and recover his invaded realm. There is however, another symbolic figure representing Christ: the Scapegoat.

The Scapegoat is an image of Our Lord present in human perception ever since our race fell into the depths of sin.

You are surely familiar with the idea of the scapegoat. I am neither a psychologist nor a philosopher but I will try to explain basically how the untimely death of our brother Charlie Kirk presents to the nation with this powerful image that God has imprinted in human conscience from the days of Cain and Abel.

It is easier for me to present the matter as it plays in a family. I lived that drama (and I am still living it) in what could be described as three levels. Level one is family, level two is community, level three is nation. For the purposes of this presentation the imaginary dysfunctional family I am going to describe is a scale model of the postwar United States but it could be any other nation, or any family or given group of human beings that have the disgrace to fall under the sway of narcissistic abusers — usually called “politicians” but they don’t have to be necessarily members of the body politic.

Dysfunctional families often have a scapegoat, a member of the group that is usually smart enough to realize the existence and extent of the dysfunctionality, co-dependency and narcissistic abuse. Everything begins with the singling out and targeting one member of the family. That includes shaming, on and off shunning, harsh criticism, and the assignment of guilt on any unresolved issues of anger and aggression. Such issues have little or nothing to do with the person being scapegoated. As the family is unable to resolve the core elements of their dysfunctionality, a process of displacement follows in which the scapegoat is blamed, mocked, ridiculed, defamed and often cruelly punished for his alleged responsibility in such matters.

That whole experience is internalized as a trauma that often leaves the scapegoat scarred for life.

Allow me to remind you that the family described here is a metaphor for our nation. Even if one could see a specific dysfunctional family reflected here —those are numerous and can be found everywhere— I challenge you to leap up in your imagination from the family unit level to the national level. Communities and nations can be seen as huge families. In fact, God has presented the whole human family with this problem so we can deal with it conceptually and practically. As usual, few are willing to flex some intellectual muscle and actually think the problem through.

The trauma causes all kinds of difficulties to the scapegoat and often continues unresolved for life. But some heroes —some glorious, emotionally talented individuals— dare to deal with the problem to take better care of themselves. Here the question arises:  What happens when the scapegoat flees and is no longer the object of the family’s abuse?

One member of the abused class was relieved from the burden of taking all that mistreatment: Charlie Kirk. His heart will not be tortured anymore by those ugly faces on television shows, by ridiculous corrupt politicians, by armies of podcasters and talking-heads hurling epithets at him. Yes, others will take the post of Charlie Kirk and the dysfunctional class will continue to be dysfunctional but … the scapegoat class have been able to process the magnicide, digest it, and will devise a plan of action to take care of the narcissistic abusers in short order without falling into violence or counter-abuse. These last few details are essential.

The dysfunctional members of the family will try to drag the scapegoat  back into the fold to continue the process. They need to do this because without the scapegoat they have to face their own obscurity, their own dumbness, their own lack of talent, their emotional ignobility. The rats will have to admit their condition, see the littered landscape surrounding them, the disorder and lack of value of their distorted concepts and ideas. They need the scapegoat as a repository for all their own inner filth that is the detritus left by sin, envy, debauchery, sloth …

What follows is an amplification, a sort of last shining moment of the long practiced abuse. One can see an example of that in talentless ‘comedians’ like Jimmy Kimmel who double down on lies and defamation instead of having a moment of reflection and take in the measure of the loss. Narcissists have no conscience, only the simulation of it learned by imitation. The diabolic tidal wave of demonic vomit is nothing but a gigantic, unconscious admission of guilt.

A note that I sadly have to remember here.  Hours after the death of Charlie Kirk, a certain blogger mentioned casually that Mr. Kirk supported his operations by means of a New York prostitution ring. Should something like that be true it would have been used by Kirk’s enemies long ago. That has to be a lie, a vicious, un-Christian act of defamation that serves to prove my point. Even after severing ties with the abusers, the scapegoat will have to face the destruction of his reputation.

I am a living proof of that myself. I would like to know how the “religious” that planted all kinds of detraction and defamation on my record can sleep at night and say Mass. I would really like to see what’s in their heart. From a distance, of course, I do not want to be splashed by that.

Now, for the “what to do” section of my diatribe: it is imperative for the scapegoat to remain mentally clear and refuse to reenter the confusion that is vomited upon those who abscond scapegoat-hood.

In the case of that family called the United States, the community of those who still have a modicum of decency left in them must steer clear of the political pigsty we sometimes call “the Uni-party” in the same way that a scapegoat leaves a toxic family. Since there is no way to rescue the concepts and ideas of the deranged, it is imperative to render them neutralized. NO VIOLENCE is necessary but extreme shunning of those ideas and the individuals that practice and espouse the nonsensical creed.

It will take time but we, as a society, owe it to God and to our own dead. This part of American history has to be exorcised. This has to be remembered like other shameful and disgraceful parts we have unfortunately inherited. A nation under God, conceived in the highest human ideals cannot do anything less.

Christ was used as a Scapegoat. That was predicted in the Law and the Prophets. He left Israel from the Cross from where he also forgave and carried upon Himself the sins of the people. But he did not meekly return expecting to change those rock-like hearts. He came to His own, to the continuation of the Kingdom of Israel we now call the Church. When the time is right He will make His Presence felt upon the rebellious world. After Christ is done with the rebels, Hell will grow fat with their souls because they forfeited their conscience and offered themselves willingly to the eternal flames.

The scapegoat will have then avenged the humiliation of sin. Forever.
